Young Rider Development Programme

Young Rider Development Programme

A practical pathway for young riders to grow through cycling.

A Thomas River Conservancy initiative supporting committed young riders from previously disadvantaged and under-resourced communities with access, repairs, equipment, guidance and opportunities to keep developing.

Why this matters

Many young riders already have the commitment. What they need is access, support and reliable equipment.

At previous Thomas River Mountain Bike Challenge events, we identified young riders who enter whenever they can, often with older bicycles and only basic equipment. Their commitment inspired this programme.

This is not about simply giving bicycles away. It is about building a responsible pathway that combines bicycle access, repairs, skills development, mentorship, event participation and conservation values. The aim is progress, dignity and continued participation.

Real riders. Real commitment. Practical support that can make a difference.

This programme starts with a simple belief: when young riders keep showing up, our community can help remove the barriers that hold them back.

About the race

A long-standing event with a conservation purpose.

The Thomas River Mountain Bike Challenge was first conceived by the Thomas River Conservancy in 2002 as a way to raise funds for conservation work in the area. The Conservancy is made up of local landowners who are jointly responsible for protecting the natural environment across approximately 30,000 hectares.

The event grew into a respected mountain bike challenge, with entries peaking at around 400 participants in previous years. A trail run was later added to broaden participation and strengthen the event's appeal to families, outdoor enthusiasts and supporters of the Thomas River area.

Why sponsorship matters

The next chapter needs partners.

The race carries real costs, including event insurance, route preparation, medical and rescue services, advertising, timekeeping, race officials, water points and cycling-body requirements. Local farmers and volunteers also contribute significant time and resources to prepare the routes and host the event.

Programme pillars

How the programme will support young riders.

The programme combines access, safety, skills and responsibility, so sponsor support becomes part of a structured and accountable development pathway.

01

Bicycle access

Providing access to safe and suitable bicycles through donations, refurbishment, sponsor-supported purchases and careful equipment management.

02

Keep riders moving

Using event repair support and sponsorship funding for safety checks, servicing, tyres, tubes, brakes, chains, cables and essential maintenance.

03

Rider development

Helping riders build confidence through safety education, training opportunities, race preparation, mentorship and bicycle maintenance knowledge.

04

Conservation values

Teaching respect for the trails and the land through responsible riding, environmental awareness, trail care and community involvement.

Measured impact

Sponsors will be able to see where their support is used.

A responsible programme

Support must be meaningful, but it must also be managed properly.

The programme will operate under the oversight of the Thomas River Conservancy. Bicycles and equipment will be recorded, repairs will be approved and tracked, and sponsor support will be reported clearly.

The focus is on dignity, commitment and progress. We want to support riders who are willing to learn, care for their bicycles, attend development opportunities and represent the programme with pride. This gives sponsors confidence that their contribution is handled with care.

Become part of the journey

Help us keep committed young riders on the trail.

These riders are already showing determination. With the right support, we can help them ride safely, develop their skills and become part of a programme that connects cycling, conservation and community.
